Today is all about gadgets for weight loss. The market is flooded with gadgets and stuff promising to help you lose weight but rarely do any of them actually work. So as a mom on a tight budget and limited time I wanted to share my musts for losing weight and having a healthy lifestyle.
Fitness tracker ($41.99)
What is it?
Okay, there are a million fitness trackers on the market and their all hip and what not but are they really necessary. Here is my take. I just got one of these a week ago and really really wish I had gotten it when I first started. The cost held me back but after months and months of research I decided to jump in and try it out. I got the basic Jawbone Up and it cost me $42.00 on Amazon. I just purchased the red one….which was my least favorite color but it was also the cheapest. Color really doesn’t matter. They range from $42-$58 bucks if you are picky about color. This is the cheapest good quality fitness tracker I could find. I liked the fitbit but it is out of my budget.
My take: This tracks my sleep, my steps and my calories burned throughout the day. It also includes a place for me to log my food. This is EXTREMELY helpful when you are trying to lose weight. You WILL hit a plateau and this will be a godsend. Now being able to see exactly what my output is each day with calories is really helping me understand what my body needs or doesn’t need to break this plateau. So if you can swing it GET THIS!!
Food Scale ($10)
What is it?
Don’t think you have to get a fancy food scale that has this clear top and all these fancy buttons. I bought a postal scale that was way cheaper and works just as well.
This is pretty helpful with calorie counting and making sure you aren’t being too generous with your calories. I had a hard time at first eyeing a chicken breast and knowing just how many ounces it was. I always thought it was around 4 when it was closer to 6 or 7. That’s a huge difference in calories so being able to weight takes the guesswork out and makes sure those extra calories aren’t sabotaging your hard work.
Water Bottle (prices vary)
This is the most important “gadget” in my opinion. Don’t give yourself an excuse to not drink water. Get a reusable water bottle that you like. I have a couple of different ones and I never leave the house without it. I take it everywhere I go that way I don’t have an excuse to not drink, drink, drink. Plus, I can just tell myself to drink 3 full bottles a day and I’ll have met my goal. That’s easier than the whole 8 glass thing or whatever….I lose track after like 3. My favorite water bottle can be found here.
Tennis Shoes (prices vary)
Please invest in a good pair of tennis shoes. I like Nike running shoes myself but everyone has their preference. Yes, these are going to cost some money but it’s well worth the investment. You will be exercising and pounding your joints and muscles all over the place. They need support and $20 shoes from WalMart isn’t going to cut it. You’ll end up having an injury that will completely derail everything and you’ll be right back where you started in no time. Plus, these shoes last forever and so it’s not like you’re having to spend $80 every 2 months. My favorites are here and here.
Free Weights/Resistance Band ($10+)
My favorite time to use free weights is when I’m watching TV. They are stored in the table next to my couch and I don’t allow myself to watch TV unless I do weights during commercials. I’m just sitting there so why not do something productive. I suggest getting 5# weights and a variety pack of resistance bands. Remember, you don’t have to have a gym membership. You can literally use these anywhere. I do arm exercises while sitting at my desk doing computer work, I do resistance band exercises while cooking and it doesn’t take much to get the heart rate up. You can always add more reps as you get stronger and these can be packed in a suitcase if you travel a lot. Who said you can’t get a good workout with a couple of bands. Find them here and here.
Weight loss doesn’t require load of money it just requires being smart about where you spend it and getting things that will give you the most bang for your buck. See ya tomorrow!!
