We are now officially experiencing cabin fever. I love, love, love my house but one can only take so much of the indoor golden yellow lights. The lack of exercise and brain stimulation is starting to get to all of us. Winters are not always so dreary because despite the cold and snow it is usually still bearable for an hour or two to get outside and play. However, the zero degree temperatures and bone chilling wind has kept us indoors for most of the past 2 months. The boys have tried to brave it a few times but have only lasted about 10 minutes before begging for fire and hot chocolate. Plus, the downside of being pregnant is I really don’t have any warm winter stuff that really fits since the maternity clothes I bought were minimum. So for me to layer up and go outdoors is slightly unrealistic at this time. Good news is the sun is out today and hoping for a bit of melting so my oldest can be off to school tomorrow. We have used so many snow days this year I fear we will be going until mid June at this rate. It has been nice having him home for Christmas break but he wants to see his friends and the poor guy can only take so much of being cooped up indoors. I feel his pain!!
In an effort to stay entertained we have been brushing up on family time including board games, movies, puzzles, cooking and football games in the living room. The boys use some stuffed banana as a football and pretty much go through every team of the nfl by the time they are worn out. Their energy is unreal and I’m actually surprised they haven’t officially gone through the floor with all the running and tackling. Thankfully, I’m usually downstairs working and have ear buds to help me subdue the noise of the herd of elephants upstairs. Without a doubt I’m sure I have the next Peyton and Eli Manning running around (and baby #3 is yet to be determined). I’m definitely going to look into getting them both to play football this fall. Yes, concussions are worrisome so we will have to weigh our options.
However, snow days are not all bad. It allows me an excuse to snuggle with the hubs on the couch after the kids have gone to bed (as if I needed an excuse) and it’s nice to reconnect after a long day. Plus, after lunch every day I send the boys to their room for one hour where they can either go to sleep or read a book quietly. It has turned into Logan reading Mason a book as they snuggle in bed. It’s the sweetest sound sitting in the living room and listening to my 7 year old read to his younger brother. Warms my heart. Hoping that love for reading sticks with them both for a very long time.
I hope you are all finding fun things to keep you entertained during the long winter days whether it’s at work, in the evenings or on the weekends! Enjoy your time together with family and friends because as much as we might complain about the cold it’s one less winter we get in our life times.
