I had a patient today tell me that they appreciated me always being able to make them laugh. I considered this one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received.
For as long as I can remember I have made it my mission in life to make people laugh. No I’m not a stand up comedian, I don’t star in romantic comedies, and honestly really probably am not that funny. However, I learned that no one wants to go a day without laughter.
I love to laugh and there is nothing greater than being able to make someone else smile and crack up. Nothing cracks the ice like joking around and having a sense of humour. I have found that no matter the situation and no matter how awkward or uncomfortable it might be, laughter cures all.
You may be thinking I have a pocket sized joke book I carry around, or come home and pour over hilarious websites all night. But this is untrue. (I do watch Tosh.O sometimes but I don’t steal his material) I find the best way to make someone laugh is to be able to laugh at myself. I usually make fun of something I do or a situation I’m in and when I show others I can poke fun of myself they quickly relax and join in.
I work in a field where we are surrounded by sickness, bad news, pain and lots of depression. Even if I can make someone smile just once a day I feel like I have done so much. Often times I focus more on making them smile than I do on my skilled therapy. I think being happy, even if it’s for one moment, is more beneficial than my therapy will ever be. Sometimes my patients just need someone to take that extra moment to really be in a moment with them and treat them like real people instead of a sick person.
I want to leave a legacy behind when I’m gone. I want to be that girl that made you laugh, the girl who came in cracked a joke and left a lasting impression. When my patients go home I want them to think of their time in the hospital and remember that one girl who blazed in, brown hair flying and made it her mission to get a laugh. I don’t know if I’ll ever fulfill this legacy, but I’m gonna try….one person at a time!
Bust a gut, laugh until you cry (or pee) and always remember the impact your smile and humor can have on someone.
There is no sweeter sound than laughter……so make someones day
