I finally have some nursery photos to show!!! This has been a very long project that I know has been a long time coming. I did most of what I wanted to do but due to some budget constraints I couldn’t make it AS elaborate as I wanted. However, I’m so happy with the way it turned out and I’m no interior designer so this is perfect for us. I think Gavin will love it and it’s definitely a theme he can continue to grow into which will save us a lot of time, hastle and money in the future. My theme was vintage nautical and for the most part we stuck with that. Most of the colors are in navy blue, white, grays and cream. I’m loving the gray and how it really brought some contrast in with all the blue and white. Most things in the room are homemade but a lot of the decor I did buy and will link you all to where I got them. It was a lot of fun to plan and put together and it’s always really exciting when it’s done. Now we get to wait the arrival of the little guy and hopefully someday he will appreciate the room as much as we do. (Sorry the pics are kind of all over the place. It was pretty nasty outside so the lighting wasn’t all that great, and for some reason my camera was not being on it’s best behavior. Plus, I can’t get on the floor or really any other position in my current state so please forgive the not so great quality)
The letters above were made with 3D cardboard letters from hobby lobby. Unfortunately, I can’t find them on their website to give you a link but they are near the glass jars and woodworking supplies in the store. I got these for about $1.15 a piece and just painted them with Navy blue and white acrylic paint. Took me about 20 minutes and cost me under ten dollars. To hang them I used Command strips which are very sturdy so I don’t have to worry about them falling on his head. I also made this “mobile.” I wasn’t really sure how this would turn out so it was kind of an experiment. I’m still not 100% in love with it but it looks cute now that it’s hung up. I desperately wanted to find gray paper but for some reason couldn’t find any that I liked. Plus, I was really tired of shopping and running around in my current state so just stuck with the brown. It’s just brown and white construction paper and I used a scrapbook hole punch to punch out the holes. I then sewed the paper together leaving enough thread on both ends to attach the wood cut outs and tie to the top. Yes, you can sew paper and it’s super easy. Just thread them through the machine like you would fabric and voila! It doesn’t damage the machine or take mad skills. I swear. I hot glued the wood cut outs to the thread and I also hot glued the thread on top after tying it to make it extra secure. I don’t like how you can see the hot glue but it’s pretty high and again….I’m no interior designer….so some things I can deal with. I attached all the string pieces to a cross stitch hoop that I also painted in the same Navy Blue as the letters. Once completed I attached 4 strings of very thin fishing line and hung it on a hook in the ceiling. It doesn’t weigh hardly anything so the fishing line is sturdy enough to hold up the whole mobile. No, it doesn’t move around or have lights and music but it will at least give him something of interest to look at. This is the “dresser” that I talked about in previous posts. It was an old entertainment center that we were no longer using. We painted it gray and white to give it a little distress look. Again, are no professionals so we kind of just slopped some stuff around until it gave us the desired effect! Great instructions right? 🙂 The changing pad on top is from my baby shower along with a baby blue minky changing pad cover. I think they are both from Target. The lamp is one of my mother n laws that we had stored in our garage. The jars are holding the pacifiers and the pacifier clips I made. I got those at hobby lobby for about 2 dollars a pop and they can be found here. They come in many different sizes and shapes to fit your particular needs and theme.
You can also find these picture frames at Hobby Lobby or online. They are all 8×10’s and I got them all for 50% off. The white ones can here and the navy blue one here. The pictures and prints inside the frame were custom made by me. I was feeling artistic and decided to make my own art for the nursery. I though they turned out really nice…nicer than I expected which is always a good thing. The shelves contain most of the decor. The canvas prints are the boys’ contribution to the room. I had them draw whatever picture they wanted and they wrote a few words to Gavin. We used permanent marker on a blank canvas print that I had sitting around. They turned out cute and I loved the personalized touches in the room. Definitely makes it more one of a kind and special. The two lantern, basket holder things are from Michaels and cost me about 15 dollars together. The sailboat can be found here and the jar was part of the baby shower decor made by my aunt. It is just a simple mason jar filled with sand with white stamped canvas hot glued around.
This other shelf contains a shelf with some toys. A couple of these toys were my husband’s from when he was a child, the books are the boy’s baby books and the spiderman jack n a box was a gift for my oldest from my mother n law. Almost everything on the shelf is very sentimental and definitely will be used with as much love as it was given with. The top shelf contains some really cool vintage lanterns that can be found here and here and another sand jar. The candles and the AHOY letters were also baby shower prize gifts as well as decor from the shower.
I also made this hanging hook creation. I used a wood plaque and painted it with the same Navy Blue and white paint used in all the other projects. After it dried I hot glued these wood cut outs of a crab, boat, anchor and octopus. I then inserted 4 hooks from Lowes underneath the cut outs and hung up these oh so adorable and fashionable hats. I can’t wait for him to wear these. Soooo stinkin cute.
This aluminum bell hangs on the side of his crib and is actually very loud. Thankfully, it’s too high for him or any of the other boys to reach at the moment. I’m thinking I may take off the white cord for more guarantee that it will not be run in the middle of the night. It’s pretty much loud enough to wake the dead. It’s one of the few silver things in the room (besides the lamp) but I like all the different texture and finishes every where.
In the top pictures you will also know some netting above the picture frames and in the corner by the closet. Those were also part of my baby shower decor which was the perfect thing I had been looking for to give a little jazz to the room. Lastly, the anchor by the door is extremely heavy and could be used as a weapon. So make sure it isn’t easily pried off the wall. haha. I got almost all the decor for 50% off so really plan for your room decor and be patient and wait for the sales. It saves soooo much money and can allow you to buy a lot more than you had originally planned. Plus, it save a bit of money that you can use if something goes wrong.
So there you have it. The nautical room of dreams….just kidding. I’m so glad that there are so many labors of love, literally, in the room and that most of it is custom made. It may not be HGTV worthy but there won’t be anything else like it and it was made with as much love as one can muster. Hope you all like it and soon you’ll see pics with the little guys soaking up all the fun.
