So, as we all know, this week has been dominated by news of Michael Phelps literally becoming one of the greatest athletes in history. I am an avid Olympics viewer and it has truly been amazing getting to watch him on his journey. I think many of us feel invested in his career and are able to celebrate right along with him every time he stands on that podium. Some may even get a bit teary eyed….I’m not admitting to anything! 🙂
Watching him (and many other athletes) always inspires me to explore myself and find my inner athlete. Not only do I always want to be in better physical shape every time I watch these games but I want to work on my mental power. The greatest things about athletes is their ability to focus, to succeed under pressure, to overcome obstacles, and to prove themselves right when everyone else says they can’t do it. These are abilities we all need whether we are on a balance beam, swimming the backstroke, or managing the curves and hill of our every day life.
Just think about how much more fun we could have if we could look fear in the face until it backs down, and accomplish those things that everyone says we can’t. Imagine how it would feel if we could quiet a room just by our dominating presence and focus. The most fulfilled life would come from that ability to pour all of our energy into one moment. We as human beings try to get through things so quickly, and we are so distracted by our ‘to do lists’ and our responsibilities that we hardly ever live in the moment. These athletes live in the moment more than anyone else in the world. 150% of their focus is on their sport, their race, their competition. Nothing else stands in the way, the mind has shut it’s doors to anything outside of that race and that moment. I wonder how much more awesome my life would be if I could focus on what I do with 150% of the moment. I want to look back on my life feeling like I cherished every moment and truly LIVED! We all breathe in and out and our hearts continuously beat but do any of us truly LIVE?
Thank you Micheal Phelps for teaching and showing all of us that we can do ANYTHING we set our minds too and for reminding us to live in our own moments so that we can be the greatest athletes in our own lives!
Hoping you all find your inner Mr. Phelps…..
