Today I wanted to share with you some awesome skin care products for those of you who suffer from breakouts and oily/combination skin. I have had skin issues since puberty and have literally tried EVERY product known to man. I am one of those people who has always battled with my skin and am always looking for what works and what doesn’t. Sadly, products are expensive and the only way to find out what works is to buy and try. Needless to say, over the years, this battle has cost me more money than I care to think about at the present moment. I have never been to a dermatologist due to the cost but someday I would like to make it there. Through my own research and trial and error I have finally found the formula that works for me (at the present moment). So here are my top picks for products and how I personally use them for my own skin.
My skin is combination/oily. I would say in the summer it is definitely more oily and in the winter more combination. I’m a big believer in not using the same skin care routine year round since here in the Midwest seasons can be drastically different. What I’m sharing with you today is a typical Spring through Fall type of routine. Again, every one has a different skin type and texture so remember to do trial and error on yourself to see what works best.
First, is the most expensive product that I recommend. It comes in at a staggering $169.00 for the whole kit which includes the mia 2, charger, brush head, travel case and cleanser. I got this for Christmas over a year ago and it was WELL WORTH the money. The cleanser ran out about 7 months of using which was pretty impressive that it lasted that long. I have not bought the cleanser again because I didn’t feel like it was anything extra special. The magic is in the Mia 2. This little gem has a one minute timer in which you use on different parts of your head for each cycle. So the forehead for 20 seconds then nose, upper lip and chin for 20 seconds and then each cheek for 10 seconds each. The mia 2 signals when it’s time to switch areas of the face making it super easy and preventing you from having to sing the ABC songs or twinkle twinkle in your head. After a minute you can rinse your face, rinse the brush and dry. Then Voila!! The skin feels so smooth and clean. It’s gentle that it doesn’t overdo the cleansing like some exfoliators can do but it’s effective enough to get rid of all the dead skin cells. This is particularly nice in the winter when dry skin can be flaky all day. This is the number one thing that has changed my skin for the better. I use it every night before bed (year round) and am absolutely loving the results.
Like I said above, I did not buy the clarisonic cleanser again after running out. I tried a few different cleansers but didn’t have impressive results with those either. In an attempt to become more aware of what I’m putting on my skin I have switched to more organic type products. I am loving this Alba detox cleanser and it works perfectly with my mia 2. I just put about a penny size drop on my mia 2 brush before turning it on. It foams nicely while cleansing and isn’t harsh on the skin nor does it leave it dry. You can find this at Wal-Mart, Target or online at Amazon for around $8.00 and it will last you several months.
This is the other Alba product that I use in the mornings. I know many people say not to exfoliate every day but for me I feel like it’s the only thing that really gets my skin clean. However, this is not a big exfoliant. It has itty bitty little exfoliators inside the cleanser that are not harsh and are almost too tiny to do any type of deep exfoliation. (That’s what the mia 2 is for) This just helps get anything off that may have formed while sleeping. Plus, it smells good, is natural, and again leaves my face feeling clean but not stripped of all the good stuff. This can be found for around $8.00 as well.
After doing a lot of research I came across tea tree oil for acne. I had seen tea tree oil used in many things and even use it to make my own anti-bacterial cleaner. What I love is that it’s natural, cheap and actually really works. All you do is dab a little on your finger and dab it on a pimple anywhere on your face. I usually do this at night, before moisturizer and before bed. I let it dry for about 1 minute and then apply my moisturizer over my whole face. The next morning I wake up and smaller pimples will have disappeared and larger ones will be dried out, significantly smaller and usually gone after one more day and one more treatment. I do not put this on in the morning and only once a day as needed. This prevents the skin around the pimple from getting to dried out. This bottle will likely last years and for only around $8.oo I think that is a pretty great steal. You can also put a few drops of this in a bottle with your favorite astringent and spray a little on the face before applying makeup in the morning. This can also help keep breakouts at bay. The only negative to this product is that if you have cats be careful about leaving it on counter tops or spilling it on the floor. Tea tree oil is very toxic to cats so be extra cautious. Veva Coconut Oil
Lastly, I have to mention, yet again, my love affair with coconut oil. This stuff is truly amazing. I have talked about all the uses of coconut oil before and still have yet to be disappointed with this product. I wear some waterproof makeup which can be hard to get off at night when cleansing. I take some of this oil and wipe it all over my eyes and let it sit while brushing my teeth. Then when I’m done I use my makeup wipe (otherwise known as Pampers sensitive skin baby wipes) and wash my whole face. This takes my eye makeup right off without any effort. I’m not pulling or straining the delicate skin and I also don’t have to worry about raccoon eyes. I do this before cleansing and then put a dab around both eyes after as an eye cream. Just put a small dab as you don’t want the eye area to be too oily for the next day. This will cause eye liner and mascara runs that don’t look very great by mid-afternoon. In the winter time I use this with my moisturizer all over my face, neck and chest to add more moisture and help re-balance my whole skin system. If you are wearing a lot of heavy makeup you can rub this all over your face before using a makeup wipe as it will help break up the grime even more. This is especially helpful for those foundations that are made to last all day and are heavier formulas. This product runs about $14.00 and has so many uses in the bathroom and in the kitchen. When buying coconut oil make sure you get organic, pure and extra virgin. This will provide the best skin benefits.
For moisturizer I use Cera-Ve products but everyone is picky about moisturizer so just go with what works for you. I use the nighttime and daytime formula.
Lastly, my biggest secret is use sunscreen EVERYDAY and EVERY WHERE even in the winter. If you don’t do anything else at least do this and you’ll save yourself a lot of skin issues and headaches down the road.
