I wanted to do a review on a recent diet I have been following. A few years ago Dr. Mike Moreno published a book called the 17 day diet (which can be found here) that contains 3 cycles for losing weight and a 4th that is considered the lifestyle portion that is followed once all the weight is lost. I was skeptical at first because the first cycle is very restrictive and after starting and failing 100 diets previously I really didn’t want to set myself up for failure. However, each cycle is only 17 days long so I felt like I could stick to anything for that period of time. Instead of focusing on losing 50 pounds I just had to focus on making it through 17 days which was A LOT less overwhelming.
So how does the diet work? Well, it’s much more in depth than I am going to bore you with but I will give you a quick general idea. The first cycle is the most restrictive and consists of mostly chicken, fish, low sugar veggies and low sugar fruits. The protein and veggies are unlimited and you can have as many portions as you desire throughout the day. You may have two servings of fruit before 2pm every day and in addition you may have 2 servings of probiotics like plain greek yogurt. The idea is you are detoxing yourself and cutting out all sugars. I assure you it sounds more miserable than it is and once you get a handle on the food it’s much easier to prepare meals with the restrictions. It is estimated you can lose about 5-10% of your body weight in these first 17 days. The second cycle brings back a few carbs that you introduce into your diet every other day all before 2pm. The weight loss slows down a bit but you can still expect around 2-5% on this cycle. Then cycle 3 is bringing most foods that you would eat but monitoring portions and calorie intake is more vital. You can expect to lose the normal 1-2 pounds per week on this cycle. Once all three cycles are completed you repeat them all until you have reached your desired weight loss.
Woosh…..okay glad we got through all that.
I have completed cycle 1 twice and cycle 2 1.5 times and here are my results so far. The first cycle I lost 13 pound right out of the gate. Then the second cycle I lost another 4. The second completion of cycle 1 I lost 8 pounds and currently I lost another 1 in cycle 2. So total I have lost 26 pounds!!! Hooray right? But what is even more awesome is I have lost that since the first week of August. Say what? In average that is about 3.25 pounds per week. Much better than the usual 1 pound I have always lost in the past. Don’t get me wrong, I still have about 30 left to lose but I am celebrating being a whole lot lighter version of myself than I was 2 months ago.
I will say that I have been exercising A LOT more than is recommended in the book. The idea is you only have to do around 17 minutes of exercise per day (Especially in cycle 1 when your foods are so restricted) however, I have been working out for at least an hour most nights of the week. This has done wonders for my body, my mental clarity and my social life since I get to hang with my bestie every night. Thank God for girl time!!! Exercising this much is not a requirement and you will still see results due to the pure calorie cutting and eliminating sugar….so don’t freak out if you can’t commit to an hour right out of the gate.
I would recommend this diet to anyone. There are modifications for anyone suffering from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure etc. It not only helps you lose weight but it really teaches you how to portion control, pick better foods, and eliminate sugars. It also keeps you motivated since you do lose a good amount of weight up front. I have also discovered that my body does not like wheat and I would have never known that if I hadn’t eliminated it from my diet. You can really start to recognize food sensitivities or allergies your body has that you never knew about….which is amazing. I have also modified this diet several times and tweaked it a little on days when I am busy, overworked or stressing. As long as you stay the course and get rid of all the guilt than great things are sure to happen.
I will be doing some more weight loss posts off and on and will provide you all with some tips that have helped me stay the course and actually conquer the flab once and for all!
If you all have questions about this diet or losing weight in general let me know?
